Ask Questions

Finding New Information

Picture
Children read many nonfiction books to find new information.  We record this on stickies and gather together to share our new facts!

Questions help us to understand more of what we are reading.  When we ask questions while reading we are deepening our understanding..  In this unit, children read many nonfiction books.   We listen to our inner voice and when we hear a question we jot it down.  When we learn something new we also record it.  Sometimes our questions are answered and sometimes we are left hanging.  We then need to figure out how we can find out the answers to these lingering questions on our own.

Charts:  What we think we know & What we learned

Picture
Before reading, children take the time to look at the cover and think about their background knowledge.  We call this BK.  Kids take a few minutes to map out what they already know about the topic.  While we read, we are mapping out what we are learning.  At the end, we can look at our chart and see what other friends wrote.  We sometimes have lingering questions and we need to look at other resources for the answers.
