You will find your child’s math assessments for unit 1 in his or her folder. This is just one of the many ways that I assess student understanding. It would be beneficial for you to review the test with your child.
Part A is for summative purposes. It shows me how students are progressing toward grade level goals. I expect students to easily complete these problems.
Part B is more of a formative assessment to help me plan future instruction. I expect that some or all students will make mistakes on this part. For example, on the Unit 1 test many students were not able to count by 2’s past 8. We will work on this in future lessons.
The last page is an open response question that requires students to apply knowledge to solve a problem and explain their thinking. Students will try this problem on their own as part of the test. Then we will solve the problem in small groups and discuss possible solutions. I’m hoping students will learn strategies from each other by sharing in a group. I will not score this portion of the test.
