This Week in First Grade
Please let me know if your child will be missing school around the Thanksgiving holiday.
TUESDAY: NOVEMBER 23, 2010 We will be making a class soup. Please bring in a plastic bag filled with cut veggies. Ideas: Potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, onions, broccoli, etc. We will do a graphing lesson about our veggies and we’ll cook our soup during the day. I’ll make some corn bread to share!
K-5 Community Building at Wilson School. Children will participate in a community-building group once a month during their lunchtime. Purpose of groups: Students thrive in a safe, respectful and responsible learning environment. The groups will nurture positive relationships between students and faculty. Students will have the opportunity to develop friendships with students in other grades and classes.
In Reading Workshop, we will focus on our classroom community. Topics will include school rules and learning together. Children will be doing many word sorts having to do with long and short vowels. This is a great thing to practice at home. Simply make word cards (index cards) and write some words on them. (Example: Cake, Bad, Tape) Children should then sort the cards! Last week we talked about city life. This week we will look at the similarities and differences between Wilson and a city. Book bags will be sent home four times this week. (Monday-Thursday). Please make sure the book bags are returned daily.
In Writing Workshop, we will continue to write about small moments.. We will have our second publishing party next Friday!
Mini Lessons will include:
· Rereading with a writing partner to make sure our stories make sense
· Zooming in like a photographer
· Word Choice: Writers choose clear, exact words to help readers see what they are talking a bout.
In Spelling, children have been doing daily word sorts. Children are taking home a copy of their words home with them on Friday. If you’d like, please review them with your child. They know many different ways to sort.
Question of the week:
How do we learn together at school?
Group, respect, share, aquarium, borrow, lines, rehearsal, soothe

Themework: We have finished up our weather unit. This week (due to swimming) we will not have time for themework. We will read communities in our reading street book.
Swimming: The kids are enjoying the water! Please remember that we are swimming everyday this week. Here is a list of things your child needs: bathing suit, towel, warm hat to wear back to school (wet hair). Optional: swim goggles. Please bring these things in some sort of bag inside their backpack (a plastic shopping bag will do) so theydon’t have to bring their backpack. It’s a goodidea for them to wear their swimsuit under their clothes to school since we go first thing (just be sure to pack undies). Our daily schedule will change to accommodate swim lessons.
· Thanksgiving break: November 24th-November 28th.
