This Week in First Grade
I hope everyone had a great Halloween. Our class party was a huge success! Thank you to all the parents who helped out! I’ve heard from a lot of parents that their little ones are getting sick. In class, we are constantly washing our hands to stay healthy. If you’d like to donate hand sanitizer and tissues please send them in with your child. J
Conference week starts is next week. Today I will be sending home a paper with your schedule conference date and time. Please sign and return it so that I know you will be at our meeting. I look forward to seeing you all next week.
In Reading Workshop, we will start have a review week. We will start unit two of Reading Street next week. The kids have been eager to see their new hardcover book! Book bags will be sent home three times this week. (Tuesday-Thursday). Please make sure the book bags are returned daily. We will talk a lot about excellent reading this week. Excellent reading should sound like you are talking. It should be at an appropriate pace and a good reader always pauses at punctuation. Please practice rereading familiar texts with your child this week. Thank you!
In Writing Workshop, we will continue to write about small moments. Students are discovering what small moments are and how we can stretch these moments across several pages. Our plan is to wrap up Small Moments by the end of the month. Today we will take a practice prompt. Children will learn about the four writing traits. (Ideas, Organization, Voice and Conventions)

Theme Work: We will continue to study weather. Last week we made parachutes. This week we will make a class anemometer to study the wind.
Swimming: Will start Nov. 15-19th. We will go each morning that week. We will leave at 9:30 to head to our first swimming lessons. Here is a list of things your child needs: bathing suit, towel, warm hat to wear back to school (wet hair). Optional: swim goggles. Please bring these things in some sort of bag inside their backpack (a plastic shopping bag will do) so theydon’t have to bring their backpack. It’s a goodidea for them to wear their swimsuit under their clothes to school since we go first thing (just be sure to pack undies). Our daily schedule will change to accommodate swim lessons.
· Conference week: Nov. 8-11th
· Students do not have school on Friday, November 12th.
· Picture Retakes: Tuesday, Nov 9th at 9:00am
