Realism vs. Fantasy

-How can you distinguish between realism or fantasy?
-How does the text support my decision of whether a text is fantasy or realistic?

Asking Questions
We are asking a ton of questions! Questions help us to understand more of what we are reading. When we ask questions while reading we are deepening our understanding.. In this unit, children read many nonfiction books. We listen to our inner voice and when we hear a question we jot it down. When we learn something new we also record it. Sometimes our questions are answered and sometimes we are left hanging. We then need to figure out how we can find out the answers to these lingering questions on our own. Guiding questions that are starting our work are:
-Why is it important to ask questions while reading?
-When do readers ask questions?
-What kinds of questions would you ask to help make decisions about text being realism or fantasy?

Author's Purpose
Children will explore what an author is and we will differentiate the difference between the author and illustrator. We soon learn that there is a reason that authors write. Understand the purpose will help the reader to understand the text better. The three reasons we explore are:
1. Entertain
2. Inform
3. Persuade
In the first grade we interact with texts that entertain and inform. Finding books that match the first grade reading level and try to persuade the reader is more challenging.

Compare/Contrast
When you hear this term many teachers and children immediately think about that old venn diagram. It's important to note that the venn diagram is a graphic organizer that help us map our thinking. This tool will be used in our class and children will soon learn that they are already comparing and contrasting on a day to day basis.
