Word Work

Picture
Monday:  Small group with teacher.  Introduction to new word sort.  Children are detectives.  We lay and say our new words and turn and talk with partners to figure out the headers.

Tuesday: No Peeking Sort  A partner reads the words to you.  You tell them where the word should go without peeking.  When you are done, children check their answers by reading the words in each column.  This is where children sometimes find mistakes.  When you are done, you switch roles with your partner.

Wednesday: Speed Sort  Children pair up with a partner and sort their words as fast as they can.  They need to say the word out loud.  When they are finished, they need to check their answers by reading the words in each column out loud.  Children can race against each other or they can use a timer to time how fast they can sort their words.

Thursday:  Sort, Check, Write  Children sort their words and write their weekly sort in their word work folder.

Friday:  Sort, Check, Glue  This is the last day for children to sort.  Children take their words home over the weekend to practice.

Class Word Hunt

Picture
Every week, two skills are taught.  Children work on a week long class word hunt.   Kids find words on the walls, in books, during read alouds and write them on our word hunt chart.  On Friday, we review our words and see how many we found.
