Mini Lesson
 Turn & Talk
In the Writing Workshop, we follow the same schedule everyday. First we start off with a mini lesson. This lesson can last anywhere between 5-10 minutes. I keep my own Writing Folder. During these mini lessons, the children see me as writer. We are all looking to improve. Children also get to learn new things about me through my stories.

Work Time & Conferences
This part of the Writing Workshop can last anywhere between 30-45 minutes. Children work independently and try to incorporate what they just learned into their writing. It's amazing to see first graders work so independently. They follow simple anchor charts around the room when they are stuck and do not know what to do. During this time, I hold conferences with students. During each conference, I make a compliment on their writing and have one teaching point. At the next conference, I check in to see how their goal is coming along. I also pull small groups and will differentiate my instruction for the students who are struggling, need an extra push or are ready for some extra steps.

Share Time
This is a very important part of the Writing Workshop. Children gather in a circle on the green carpet for share time. Sometimes selected students will share their work of the day. Other times we might do a popcorn share where students share a sentence, topic, title or a special section of their piece. There are many teaching points that come out during share time. Children are good listeners and think of comments and/or questions that they could ask their peer.
